Anishinabek communities in the Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin nda dakiimnaan, are the original inhabitants of lands now known as Ontario. Anishinabek having been lowered here by Creator are recognized to have inherent rights and jurisdiction. Rights affirmed and recognized through treaty. Not given by the Crown or its actors. RHW communities support the legitimate claims of Metis, recognize that there are mixed blooded people living within our territory. Our communities have a responsibility to protect our inherent rights, our inherent laws and lands. Part of carrying out these responsibilities and obligations is to know who our relationship partners are. This is what our research is about.
To review evidence provided by the Metis Nation of Ontario's (MNO) for the so-called "historic Metis communities" in Robinson Huron Territory, as well as the evidence for the original Sault Ste. Marie Metis community, validated by the 2003 Supreme Court of Canada Powley Decision.
This report was commissioned by Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin in August 2023 as part of the research they've been leading about the Metis Nation of Ontario's (MNO) political claims in Robinson-Huron territory.
